The influences of parental empathy on children`s emotion regulation: the mediating effect of self-esteem

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effects of self-esteem on the relation between parental empathy and children`s emotion regulation. The study investigated 543 children who are in the 5th and 6th grade of 4 primary schools. Results of the study are summarized as follows. First, with respect to parental empathy by grade, there was a statistically significant difference. That is, father`s empathy of grad 5 was higher than grad 6. And with respect to emotion regulation by gender, it shows statistically significant difference. That is, emotion regulation of girls was higher than boys. Second, children`s emotion regulation according to parental empathy was partial mediated by self-esteem.
